I am always fascinated to speak to people that get into the construction industry, find out the reasons why they want this career. I am also very interested in people that get out of the business and find out the why. All it takes to see someone leave the construction business is a bad client, suppliers that walk away, trades and poor workmanship, slim profits, too many losses, and the stress and toll this business can take on our family and personal lives. The Construction Life isn’t always about the pretty filters from social media, there is bad and I know most followers don’t care to discuss the bad. Bad is real, and anyone that is passionate and real about construction will encounter bad. Embrace the bad and keep pushing through it and prove all of those MoFo’s wrong.⁣

This is construction, shit always happens and contractors are always made out to be the “bad guy”. You need to look deep into what and why it happened and use that, make it yours, throw it back into the love you had when you began in construction. Don’t push away the hard stuff, embrace it, learn from it, earn from it. Watch for the signals because this will happen to every single contractor that chooses construction as a career path. I want to talk about sharing. #MannyMondays My first year and my first big job I had a stair guy come in to do some work and during the process this tradesperson refused to do a detail in front of me because he felt I was gonna steal his idea and start my own stair company. Such BS, never heard of Hardcore Stairs. I bring this up cause a good buddy of mine, Harvey from @firstplacecapital give him a follow brought up a story, he reached out to a designer and asked about a product they used and worked with, Harvey asked if they could pass on the contact info. Designer says if Harvey hires them, they will share the contact. I’m like WHAT! Listen up you stupid designers, you need us contractors just as much as we need you. Share the info that you obtain, that way that tradesperson can have more work, that tradesperson can build their business. That tradesperson can help build the construction industry. Share it, don’t be stupid about it. Every time someone has reached out to me about a product or a detail and asked me, I have gladly given the info up. Why? Cause I want to see this amazing industry grow and we need new people, people that can take this amazing to new heights and that all begins with sharing. ⁣How about a little respect builders? Sub Contractors spend a lot of time and effort assembling these estimates to get the work. Builders, keep the Sub Contractors in the loop, let them know how the estimate is being received, and or interpreted by the clients. Builders have a conversation with the Sub Trade about the estimate, discuss the numbers thoroughly and assist them in better positioning their business. Most Sub Trades are passionate about the construction industry and they want to leave a lasting impression and it all starts with the estimate. Please don’t forget the time it takes to put all of these estimates together. ⁣

⁣Builders / GC’s don’t leave the estimates in the dark, don’t ignore follow up texts, don’t ignore follow up emails and calls. Don’t play these games. All we are asking for, is a little respect. R E S P E C T⁣

Let’s talk about HOV lanes and letting contracto

Let’s talk about HOV lanes and letting contractors use those lanes on today’s #MannyMondays I think contractors should be allowed to drive in those lanes all day long even with one person in the work vehicle. A decade ago, even 2 decades ago, contractors could get to 3 maybe 4 different job sites but today they are lucky to get to 2 job sites. I am only speaking about Toronto and the traffic in Toronto is bad and the government will never do anything about it. Contractors can’t take public transit, they can’t take bicycles to work, contractors need to get around the city because they make money on the job-site, not on the road way, no money to be made while driving if you are a self employed contractor. Yes I do believe contractors with legitimate work vehicles should be allowed in the HOV lane. Let me hear from you. Have a great week everyone. We haven’t stopped the spread in Canada and I feel we ALL need to stay home and stay safe and that goes for ALL construction. Take this time to rebuild your business, analyze your weaknesses and strengths and build on them. I am concerned about contractors shutting down for good. Reach out to others and ask them what they are doing to handle the current climate. Put down the power tools and pick up the pencils. Figure out how you can pivot your business and prepare for income to return. Read that book, take that online course, really spend quality time and make every hour count. @yvesway also said it in his posts today, thank you Sir. We can either look at the negatives or we can prepare and build for tomorrow. I am choosing tomorrow. Stay Safe and Come Back. Prior to us starting all worktops were real wood Oak but had been neglected by previous owners of the property and was in poor condition, the sink area was particularly bad and beyond restoration. Customer didn’t want to waste money on replacing all worktops if not needed, but was concerned replacing the sink side worktop with new oak and not the island would end up with a noticeable difference in the colour, which was a pretty high possibility. We decide to go for a different material for the sink side worktop and restore the Oak island top.
We supplied and installed Quarts for the sink area worktop and fully sanded and restored the oak island worktop. I personally love the two materials together the beauty of the quarts and the warmth of the natural wood really complement each other. I’m please to report the customers are also very happy with the end result

This SUV looking thing is cast out of solid concrete. I got underneath and it is all concrete. I did some research... Vhils is the tag name of Portuguese graffiti/street artist Alexandre Manuel Dias Farto. This street art was executed in partnership with @seatportugal the car manufacturer. It weighs in at 15,000 kg or over 30,000 lbs! It sits in the marina district of #cascais #portugal Anyone who has done any concrete work knows this is no easy task and really, anyone in the trades could truly appreciate what it took to create this beauty. .

Early in my construction career I came up with thi

Early in my construction career I came up with this idea to put a rc race track in a bedroom and have it hard mounted on the ceiling secured to an electric pulley system.
I laminated sheets of 3/4" maple, radius the entire perimeter, primed it and then came the aircraft cabling at three points connected to a hardmounted electric winch.

I made it work beautifully, it worked so nicely and I was extremely proud of myself.
The idea, push a button for it to lower and stop at a certain height and then hit another button to make it go back up and out of the way.
But after a few weeks of discussions it was ultimately vetoed and was never completed.

Maybe one day, I might build this for My Kids Room.

This bathroom reno was always about this cast iron

This bathroom reno was always about this cast iron @kohler freestanding tub. I love that the old bathroom, all of the 4 key fixtures were kept in the same place, just made it Hardcore and updated.
It was a challenge to get this 600 pound tub upstairs and please check out the video post of that process. We had to build a custom box and four guys man handled it up the flight of stairs, onto a dolly and into the bathroom.

The floor joists were sistered for added support, solid lumber blocks, plywood and then 1/4" steel pads were installed exactly where the feet of the tub would end up.

Everything was incredibly tight, from the closed Roman bath faucet to the exposed drain, Paul from Turbo Plumbing made this difficult install a reality, thanks buddy.

The virtuous china skirt finishes off the beauty of this tub and the stone wainscoting wraps around the tub and the room to create this stunning renovation.

It has always been about the details.
As real renovators we take great pride in figuring out how the details are going to unfold. With this recent White Reno project, the number of details were insane.
Every single reno project of mine that I built, that is on my social media pages, I also designed. I built what I wanted to and took credit for the actual work I did and I have always given full credit to any and all other trades that did the work.
I do this because I am a real renovator and I respect the construction industry and all of the hard working tradespeople. It has always been about the passion and not the dollar. The dollar will eventually come in full but always focus on the passion first, never lose sight of that passion for The Construction Life. We haven’t stopped the spread in Canada and I feel we ALL need to stay home and stay safe and that goes for ALL construction. Take this time to rebuild your business, analyze your weaknesses and strengths and build on them. I am concerned about contractors shutting down for good. Reach out to others and ask them what they are doing to handle the current climate. Put down the power tools and pick up the pencils. Figure out how you can pivot your business and prepare for income to return. Read that book, take that online course, really spend quality time and make every hour count. @yvesway also said it in his posts today, thank you Sir. We can either look at the negatives or we can prepare and build for tomorrow. I am choosing tomorrow. Stay Safe and Come Back. On today’s #WorkinWednesdays I want to share Yves Way The Kitchen Guy who is doing amazing work from across the pond. Give him a follow and check out his great stores. Keep up the awesomeness guys. • @yvesway A recent project we completed for a customer in Crystal Palace.
Prior to us starting all worktops were real wood Oak but had been neglected by previous owners of the property and was in poor condition, the sink area was particularly bad and beyond restoration. Customer didn’t want to waste money on replacing all worktops if not needed, but was concerned replacing the sink side worktop with new oak and not the island would end up with a noticeable difference in the colour, which was a pretty high possibility. We decide to go for a different material for the sink side worktop and restore the Oak island top.
We supplied and installed Quarts for the sink area worktop and fully sanded and restored the oak island worktop. I personally love the two materials together the beauty of the quarts and the warmth of the natural wood really complement each other. I’m please to report the customers are also very happy with the end result
